Is your work fulfilling? Do you enjoy going to work every day? Is it physical work? Intellectual? A mix of both?
In my latest story, we meet Arabella. She works at the Institute of Myths and Legends. At least she did, until her boss fired her. The next day, her boss ends up dead. She may be a suspect, or she may be next on the list of people to be murdered.
None of my jobs have ever been that dangerous or exciting.
I think I’d enjoy a role investigating mysteries, or de-bunking myths. I can see myself, working on solving puzzles, at a big old wooden roll top desk. It would have many hidden compartments. Lots of hiding places.
With a mix of technology and old-fashioned pen and paper I’d try my hand at sleuthing. The internet would make it easier than the olden days, but there’d still be a lot of walking, watching and asking questions. How would you tackle a problem like this?
Would you try and solve the mystery of what happened to your boss? Would you prefer to run far away, to somewhere safe, out of harm’s way?
What do you think Arabella will do?
Like all my main characters, she’s a little awkward. Not sure about social situations. Who can she trust? There’s the policeman, the reporter, or her old school friend.
I’m busy writing Arabella’s story, while Watch Out for the Blackwood Women is out with ARC readers.
I think in any occupation there is an element of investigation. Whether it is as a teacher, administration, management, in retail (or any other career you can think of) to do our job properly there is problem solving and questioning.
Life is just one giant, complex jigsaw puzzle!
