Halloween invokes phrases in posts on social media; the thinning of the veil, trick or treating, bonfires, dressing up in costumes and masks, and ancestors who have passed coming back to speak to us. Its history dates back to an ancient Celtic festival commonly known as Samhain. It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits. It has at different times, been considered a religious occasion, a pagan celebration, and a secular holiday.

Some take it seriously. We love it or we hate it. There are strong views around the whole trick or treat activity, dressing up ourselves or our homes. So much emotion around this yearly event. I wonder if it is fear that drives some of the negativity, just as passion drives the positive, dedicated Halloween lovers. Fear of ghosts, fear of the unknown, of the mystery of the occasion.

I for one love the cute and not so cute stories, posts, movies, books and videos that celebrate all things witchy, ghoul like and mysterious. I love the details, the energy, the anticipation of the day. One year I would love to be a part of a Halloween gathering. Who else is with me? Happy Halloween everyone!
