A huge thank you those who came along for the opening of our studio last weekend. It was awesome to celebrate all Pete’s hard work in getting the space up and running.

I have been asked about essential oils and safety; here is some information to keep handy.

Diffusers

  • Use fresh clean water each use, empty out any water and oils from last use
  • No more than 6 drops of essential oil in the diffuser – they are working even if we can’t smell them
  • Around children – diffuse for no more than an hour at a time; for adults 2 hours is fine. We don’t need to use the 5 or 10 hour settings, the oils linger in the air long after the diffuser is turned off
  • Every week, clean the diffuser with vinegar and water

Essential oil safety

Essential oil safety – our oils are medicinal so we do need to exercise a degree of caution when we use our essential oils and related products:

  • Read the label and always adhere to warnings
  • Store out of reach of children, and in a cool place away from light
  • Avoid putting oils in or near your nose, ears, eyes, broken skin or sensitive areas
  • Citrus oils can cause sun sensitivity, so don’t apply before going out in the sun
  • 6 drops or less in the electronic diffuser, and diffuse for between 1 and 2 hours at a time
  • When applying topically, always dilute with a carrier oil, never apply directly to our skin
  • dilution ratio one drop of essential oil to five drops of carrier oil
  • When cooking only use a drop of essential oil, the oil is so much more stronger than the fresh or dried herb (if you want to add an extra drop for flavour, taste test it first)
  • To flavour water or tea, only add a drop and make sure it is an oil you can take internally
  • Err on the side of caution, and don’t take essential oils internally, even in a veggie cap, unless you trust the professional advice
  • Always consult your doctor about your health concerns

There are three main ways to use our essential oils:

  • Inhalation – 4 – 6 drops in the diffuser filled with water, or a couple of drops in the palm of our hands and inhale
  • Topically – diluted with carrier oil, rolled on bottom of feet, wrists, neck, (depending on the area requiring support)
  • Internally – although use extreme caution and only ever one drop in a glass of water, or when flavouring salad dressing, muffins and other cooking

Essential oils for first aid, for cooking, for moods and emotions and so much more.

My favourite oils this week – Bergamot for focus and uplifting mood, spearmint and lime for positive energy and getting stuff done. Ice Blue for pain management, OnGuard for immune support and Lemon for cleaning.

For those in lockdown – stay safe, and try to keep positive, finding something each day to be positive about. I try to remember to list three things at list, and to day thank you thank you thank you out loud as often as possible.
