Two minute meditation – I am being realistic, for me at least, any longer than two minutes and I get distracted. I am sure as I practice meditation more often I would get better at meditating for longer periods of time. I know myself enough to know that for now, a two minute meditation will do.
I don’t mean a guided meditation, I am okay at those types of meditation, where someone talks us through a specific goal, such as meeting our spirit guides. These longer meditations are awesome tools for learning new skills, clearing blockages, moving through grief and other life situations.
My two minute meditations are a focusing tool, and a way to flip the thought, when we feel the negativity getting in the way of how we want to live our life.
Despite our best efforts, things can happen that make us focus on something negative, or something we don’t want. A two minute meditation is a tool to quickly stop and re-focus us.
Two minute meditations; we can do these literally anywhere;
- In the car
- Washing up
- In the shower
- In the garden
- On a walk
- First thing in the morning
- Last thing at night
- Anywhere and anytime you need to
As soon as we find ourselves slipping into a negative thought pattern, this is what to do. Start by doing our breathing exercise. Focus on our breathing – in through the nose for a count of five, hold for a count of five, release through the mouth for a count of five. Repeat for a total of five times.
Then as we continue this breathing pattern, stop the thoughts that are swirling around in our mind. Think about our goals. What was it we wanted to focus on today? Was it finishing a project, completing tasks, or was it a longer term goal we were setting intentions for? Let our mind wander back to that goal, and focus, picturing it happening. Believe it, dream it, feel it and act like it has happened.
Then we simply continue with our day, re focused back on the important stuff.
I do want to make note here that sometimes, the best laid plans go awry. I have a couple of great examples here. I often list my goals for the day on a piece of paper in the morning, setting my intention for a successful and productive day. Some days, things happen, and other people take me off on a tangent. There is no way I will reach my daily goals. This is where we need to be focused but fluid. Long term I will still reach my goals, just not today. So my meditation is focused on the tasks at hand as well as reassurance of the knowledge I will still achieve my goals.
Another example is when ICT does not work as expected. Despite my best efforts at posting some workshop videos on using essential oils as first aid, it is not going to happen today. I will try again tomorrow. My two minute meditation focuses on that fact, that I can try again tomorrow, and that today instead I finish this blog.
Family, relationships, even pets can all drive us to distraction. A simple two minute meditation can get us back on track. Release what we need to. Focus on what we can achieve, all the while keeping the long term goal in focus.
Using a crystal or talisman, a candle and diffusing essential oils can help when we need that extra motivation to stop, breathe, reassess and carry on. Life can be complicated. Meditation doesn’t have to be.
