Anzac Day 2017 and despite terrorist threats, and everyone’s lifestyle being busier than ever, there is a renewed surge and energy in the day. A time of stopping, reflecting and giving thanks to all those servicemen and women who dedicated their lives to keeping us safe. People of all ages are paying their respect and thanks to the brave men and women of the past and present.
From a young age I heard the story that my dad had fibbed about his age so he could join the Air Force and serve in World War II. Even with that history, for some reason Anzac Day never really meant a lot to me growing up. Dad died when I was nine and prior to that I only ever remember going to one Anzac Day march. Mum and Dad tried to keep me away from so many things, for the right reason. It was the thing back then, to try to shelter children from everything. Don’t get me wrong, I have Dad’s medals and his hat and I cherish his memory, but for some reason Anzac Day never rated on my radar.
With my own children, with their Dad we instilled in them a pride and respect for those who served and continue to serve. They have grown into adults who show care and respect for others, for those who have served and for the future of the country. As do all, young and old, there is worry and concern for a world where some in power with powerful weapons make threats. Others hide behind religion and the label terrorists to try to scare and injure others. The best thing we can all do is to stay positive in the face of such threats. As has been shown throughout the world, people stay strong and refuse to be scared into hiding, when faced with the threat of terror attack or war.
On this day we remember those who have served and those who are serving as well as future generations who will help protect and keep safe our country and way of life. We cherish our lives and our freedom. We share stories of those who have gone before us. We keep them alive in our hearts and minds. We don’t give in. On a personal note, I am going to research my dad’s history and write it down so my children and future generations will learn about him.
